A Levels (Advanced Level qualifications) are a U.K subject-based qualification for students aged 16 and above. They are usually studied over the course of 2 years, and lead to qualifications recognised for entrance to higher education institutes in the UK and many others worldwide.
What grades do I need to take A levels?
You normally need:
- at least five GCSEs at grades 9 to 4
- at least a 5 or 6 in the specific subject(s) you want to study
Specific requirements needed to study A levels will vary across colleges. It's important to check what you will need with the college where you are looking to study.
Who are they for?
- If you're thinking about going to university, most higher education courses require specific A levels or combinations of A levels (or alternative level 3 qualifications).
- If you’re not sure what career or job you want to do, studying a selection of A levels can be a good way of keeping your options open.
For more information:
- Check out the websites of the colleges you are planning to apply to and be sure to attend open evenings/days when you will get the opportunity to ask lots of questions.
- If you are planning to continue with a subject that you have been studying at GCSE, speak to your class teacher and they will have more information about the A-level course of study.
